P20 WOMEN'S PARLIAMENT

Parliament will host an agenda-setting 2025 P20 Women’s Parliament on 13 and 14 August under the theme: “Accelerating Equality, Sustainability and Shared Growth.”
 
The event will present a unique opportunity to consolidate efforts by the legislative sector toward gender equality, inclusive development and women’s empowerment, aligning domestic policies with global commitments. It is taking place during a year of many milestones for women and girls worldwide. The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, as well as the ten-year milestone of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
 
In 2021, Parliament adopted the Women’s Charter for Accelerated Development following a comprehensive 25-year review of the 1994 Women’s Charter. This Charter reaffirmed national obligations to eliminate structural inequality and reaffirmed the role of Parliament as a key site for gender-responsive policymaking and oversight.
 
This sectoral Parliament will provide the opportunity to align the Women’s Charter with South Africa’s long-term development goals, particularly the National Development Plan (NDP 2030), African Union Agenda 2063 and the G20 Women’s Empowerment Agenda. It will highlight how Parliament can use its legislative, oversight and representative functions to accelerate gender transformation across all sectors.
 
Participants include Parliament’s Presiding Officers, women in leadership from regional and international development partners (AU, UN Women, G20), provincial legislatures, NGOs and Chapter 9 institutions. Internal stakeholders include members of Parliament’s Multiparty Women’s Caucus and Portfolio and Select Committees on Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, and representatives from the Parliamentary Budget Office.
