Social Services Cluster Committees Media Briefing
The Chairpersons of Parliament’s Social Services Cluster Committees will host a virtual media engagement session tomorrow, Thursday, 15 January 2026, to outline Parliament’s oversight role in ensuring education institutions are ready for 2026 under the theme, “Strengthening Accountability and Readiness Across the Education System.”
During the briefing, the respective committee Chairpersons will highlight Parliament’s oversight role in ensuring quality, access, readiness, and accountability across the education system from early childhood development to post-school education and training.
- Ms Joy Maimela, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, will reflect on key oversight matters, including parliamentary oversight of performance trends, systemic challenges and areas requiring urgent intervention post the 2025 Matric Results; School Readiness for the new academic year; reflect on the findings during an oversight visit to Limpopo; and the impact of teenage pregnancy on education outcomes and the effectiveness of current prevention and learner-support interventions.
- Mr Makhi Feni, Chairperson of the Select Committee on Education, Science and Creative Industries, will address legislative and policy oversight matters, including emphasising the right to education, including access and inclusivity for foreign nationals; oversight of qualification standards, training pathways and implementation challenges within the Early Childhood Development sector; and the implementation of the BELA Act.
- Mr Tebogo Letsie, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training, will outline oversight priorities within the post-school education sector, including the funding administration preparedness, student access and measures to prevent disruptions at the start of the academic year; institutional preparedness at universities, TVET colleges and SETAs for the 2026 academic cycle; and oversight considerations arising from the suspension of Vice-Chancellors at Mangosuthu University of Technology and implications.
