Parliament, Friday, 18 August 2017 – The West Coast leg of the public hearings on the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill, which were deferred in January 2017 by the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs due to urgent parliamentary business, will be held on Monday, 21 August 2017.

The hearings will be held at the Dial Rock Community Hall in Saldanha, in the Western Cape, from 10h00.

The Bill seeks, among other things, to provide for the statutory recognition of the legitimate Khoi-San leadership and communities. The Bill also provides for the integration of recognised Khoi-San leaders into existing houses of traditional leadership, called houses of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders. Separate structures for the Khoi-San will fall away.

The Committee began its nationwide public consultation process into this Bill in 2016, where the views of residents were solicited in three to four districts in all the nine provinces. The Committee is now awaiting inputs from the residents of the West Coast district before the report on the Bill and public hearings can be tabled to the National Assembly.

The Bill has been in the legislative pipeline since 1997 and was formally tabled before the Committee in 2015.
