Parliament, Monday 9 April 2018 – Parliament’s Joint Rules Committee has established a subcommittee to make recommendations on processing the key findings of the High Level Panel on the Assessment of Key Legislation and the Acceleration of Fundamental Change.
The multiparty subcommittee will report on these recommendations by 15 May to the Joint Rules Committee, which National Assembly Speaker Ms Baleka Mbete and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Ms Thandi Modise head.
The subcommittee has 13 members - eight of them from the National Assembly and five from the National Council of Provinces. Mr Archibold Nyambi and Mr Cedric Frolick, the House Chairpersons of Committees in the National Council of Provinces and National Assembly, are the co-chairpersons of the subcommittee. The High Level Panel on the Assessment of Key Legislation and the Acceleration of Fundamental Change, which former President Kgalema Motlanthe chaired, was appointed to take stock of the laws of our democracy and make recommendations about them. After about a year of extensive countrywide consultations and public hearings, the Panel handed its final report to the Speakers’ Forum in November 2017.
