Parliament, Sunday, 2 March 2025 – Tomorrow, the chairpersons from the governance cluster committees will address the media as part of the 7th Parliament’s weekly media engagement programme. The four chairpersons will brief the nation about the critical work undertaken by these committees since the start of the 7th Parliament. They will, among other things, give a brief on municipal governance and finance, planning and legislative reforms in state-owned companies, inclusive education system and legislation, economic infrastructure for job creation, and building a professional, capable, ethical, and developmental state.

National Council of Provinces
The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will embark on a strategic planning session on Tuesday and Wednesday to plan for the business and programmes of its committees. The session aims to enhance the work of the select committees for the benefit of provinces and, by extension, the people of South Africa. The NCOP represents the provinces to ensure that provincial interests are considered in the national sphere of government. It does this mainly by participating in the national legislative process and providing a national forum for public consideration of issues affecting the provinces.
On Thursday, the Council will hold a debate on the theme of “Strengthening measures to build viable municipalities and municipal capabilities to meet the needs of communities.”

National Assembly
The National Assembly (NA) will debate International Mother Language Day on Tuesday at 14:00. The day was first proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and later adopted by the UN General Assembly. It underscores the role of languages in promoting inclusion and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The NA sitting will be preceded by a plenary at 10:00 for consideration of various oversight visit reports, including a petition from residents of Ward 20, Ward 29, Ward 36, and Ward 92 in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, who are calling on the Assembly to investigate water supply in their areas.

The peace and security cluster (1) will appear on Wednesday at 15:00 before NA for oral questions from Members of Parliament. The security cluster comprises Correctional Services, Defence and Military Veterans ministries, Home Affairs, International Relations and Cooperation, Justice and Constitutional Development, Police, and Minister in the Presidency (State Security). The oral questions are among the instruments that Parliament uses to hold the executive accountable, as section 91(2) of the Constitution stipulates that Cabinet members are accountable collectively and individually to Parliament for exercising their powers and performing their duties.

On Thursday at 14:00, the NA will hold an urgent debate on the United States Government's decision to halt aid to South Africa and its response. Mr Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters sponsored the debate on this matter of national public importance. The House will also consider various oversight visit reports.

On Friday, starting at 10:00, the NA will hold four mini-plenaries on matters of national importance.
