Parliament, Sunday 20 October 2019 – Among envisaged events of this week is the First Speaker’s forum in the 6th Parliament comprising nine provincial Speakers, National Assembly Speaker and Chairperson of National Council of Provinces. They are to converge in Cape Town to discuss issues of mutual concern in the legislative sector. The two-day gathering takes place on Wednesday and Thursday.

Questions for the oral reply by the Deputy President David Mabuza and Ministers in the Economic Cluster, 35 Committee meetings and joint oversight visit to Limpopo province by the NCOP Select Committees are also in the programme.

National Assembly plenary House sittings are also scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, the Deputy President, David Mabuza will be up for questions whilst on Wednesday, the Ministers in the Economic cluster will also respond to their various portfolios. Oral Questions in the House is one of the oversight mechanism used by Parliament over the executive.

The Special Appropriation Bill will also be considered on Tuesday. The bill was tabled in Parliament on 23 July and it seeks to provide additional funding allocation to assist Eskom with its financial challenges.

Condolences for the late Ms Bavelile Hlongwa, (Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy who passed away in a motor vehicle accident last month) is scheduled for Thursday.

The NCOP’s Select Committees on Security and Justice together with Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) will undertake an oversight visit to Limpopo - Vhembe District, Makhado and Thohoyandou to assess the implementation strategies and the state of municipalities.

There are 35 Committee Meetings scheduled this week and will cover a range of issues including consideration of draft committee reports on the Budgetary Review and Recommendation Reports (BRRR) and briefings by government departments and entities.
