Parliament, Friday, 19 May 2017 – Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry today recommended the incumbent, Prof N Nevhutanda, to continue as the Chairperson of the Board of the National Lotteries Commission.

Committee Chairperson, Ms Joanmariae Fubbs, explained that Prof Nevhutanda has already served a term of five years and is two-and-a-half years into his second term. “The term is normally five years and according to legislation, not more than two terms of five years each. The Committee therefore recommends to the Minister of Trade and Industry (DTI) that Prof N Nevhutanda serve the remainder of the legislative term and not a five-year term from the date of this latest appointment.”

The Committee’s recommendation follows the interviews it conducted last week with three shortlisted candidates, Mr W Huma, Mr A Mawela and Prof N Nevhutanda.

Today’s recommendation followed the process by which an appointment can only be made after the Minister has by notice in the Gazette and, in at least two newspapers, invited interested parties to nominate suitable candidates. In compliance with the Lotteries Act, 1997 (Act No.57 of 1997) as amended, the Minister has submitted the names of the nominated candidates to Parliament for consideration.

The Committee was informed that the DTI received a total of 111 applications and using the necessary criteria, shortlisted the candidates to 35. It later used the criteria to further refine the shortlist to recommend three candidates to the Committee to interview.

Ms Fubbs said the Committee decided to recommend Prof Nevhutanda as he came across as the strongest candidate in the interviews. “He came across as confident and had a clear vision as to how the current challenges facing the Commission should be addressed.”

The Committee further felt under his watch the Commission has managed to develop the necessary control mechanism which led to a turn-around and an unqualified audit opinion.

The name of the preferred candidate will now be documented on the announcement, tablings and committee reports of Parliament.
