Parliament, Thursday, 2 April 2026 – The Presiding Officers of Parliament extend warm wishes to all South Africans of the Christian faith as they observe Good Friday and celebrate the Easter weekend. While this sacred period is observed by Christians, its message of sacrifice, hope, renewal, and compassion resonates across communities in our diverse and constitutional democracy.
Good Friday marks one of the most profound moments in the Christian calendar, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is a solemn remembrance of the supreme sacrifice made for the redemption of humanity, and this day calls believers to reflect on the depth of God’s love, grace, and mercy. Easter Sunday, which follows, celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ—signifying victory over sin and death and the promise of new life. The resurrection stands as a powerful affirmation of hope, restoration, and new beginnings—values that continue to inspire humanity in times of challenge and uncertainty.
During this period, many South Africans will travel across the country to spend time with loved ones, attend worship services, and participate in community gatherings. The Presiding Officers encourage all citizens to use this time for reflection and to embrace the enduring values of love, compassion, humility, forgiveness, and generosity.
In the face of persistent socio-economic challenges, including poverty, unemployment, and inequality, this season calls on all in society to embody the values of compassion and care by supporting those in need, strengthening community bonds, and fostering a spirit of humanity and solidarity. Let us reach out to those in need, support vulnerable members of our communities, and strengthen the bonds that unite us as a nation.
As millions take to the roads during this busy travel period, the Presiding Officers urge all road users to exercise caution, patience, and responsibility. Motorists are encouraged to obey the rules of the road, cooperate with law enforcement authorities, and show respect and courtesy to fellow road users. Road safety is a collective responsibility—together, we must ensure that all who travel arrive safely at their destinations.
May this period be marked by peace, reflection, and a renewed commitment to building a caring, inclusive, and united South Africa.
