Parliament, Monday, 16 September 2019 – As part of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) flagship programme of Provincial Week, the Gauteng permanent delegates to the NCOP will embark on a week-long oversight visit to the province to assess the state of municipalities.

With the theme Building sustainable, responsive and people-centred Municipalities, the delegates, together with their counterparts in the provincial legislature, will interact directly with the public on service delivery issues, such as the housing backlog, water infrastructure maintenance and waste collection.

Tomorrow, delegates will meet with the premier, MECs, executive mayors, ward councillors and representatives from the South African Local Government to be updated on the state of the province’s municipalities and to find solutions to challenges.

The MECs of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs, Economic Development and Finance will focus on delivery of basic services (water, sanitation, and electricity) and the viability of municipalities, local economic development and the financial state of municipalities, which includes compliance with legislation and spending on various grants.
