Parliament, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Social Development would like to strongly encourage the Gauteng provincial authorities responsible for the mortuary services affected by strike action to put in place temporary arrangements to assist families who have lost their loved ones.

The Committee has received a number of calls from affected members of the public requesting the intervention of the Committee in this matter. The strike is not only impacting on the dignity of the dead, it is also causing additional trauma to bereaved families who have lost loved ones.

The Committee hopes that a lasting solution will be found between the parties so that people who have lost their loved ones can begin the process of healing.
