Parliament, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development will tomorrow (25 October 2017) deal with the case of ill treatment of small businesses by big companies in the telecommunications sector.

This is in response to complaints the Committee received from Boniswa Corporate Services against Huawei and Telkom; Screamer Solutions against Telkom, Huawei and MTN; Neela Trading against Vodacom and Ericson South Africa; and Mobile Diesel Supply against Vodacom.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Ruth Bhengu, said small businesses lack the financial resources necessary to fight big companies taking the protracted legal route. Thus, they can find themselves liquidated, losing investments and incurring a bad credit record.

“South Africa looks to small businesses to create 9.9 million new jobs by 2030, as envisaged by the National Development Plan. This goal will not be achieved under the current relationship between big and small businesses,” said Ms Bhengu.
