Parliament, Wednesday, 20 April 2022 - The Presiding Officers of Parliament, led by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Mr Amos Masondo, have expressed their shock and sadness at the sudden passing of respected former youth leader and consummate public servant, Mr Thabo Maemo Masebe.
Mr Masebe, an anti-apartheid struggle activist who cut his political teeth in the Congress youth movement, dedicated his youth and adult life to the service of the people of South Africa - as a courageous and fearless combatant for our liberation and as a quintessential servant leader of our post-apartheid public service. With his calm, unassuming demeanour and profound intellectual depth, Mr Masebe brought passion, care and humanity to his leadership roles. He embodied unmatched integrity, passion, selflessness and loyalty.
A political communicator par excellence, he formed part of the first generation of great strategists who laid a firm foundation and systems for democratic South Africa's public communications based on the fundamental constitutional values of transparency, openness, and accountability.
Mr Masebe has gone too soon. However, he has left an enduring and indelible legacy of highly principled political servanthood and outstanding public communications worthy of emulation by future generations of young leaders and activists.
The Presiding Officers of Parliament extend their heartfelt condolences and sympathies to Mr Masebe's family, friends and comrades on a profound loss of such a faithful, loyal servant and an extraordinary South African.
