Parliament, Sunday, 1 November 2026 – The Presiding Officers of Parliament, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Thoko Didiza, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, have expressed their deep sadness at the tragic passing of renowned environmental activist and social justice champion, Dr Desmond D’Sa.
For more than three decades, Dr D’Sa stood alongside communities in South Durban, giving a voice to families who lived in the shadow of industrial pollution. He believed that no community should have to choose between earning a living and breathing clean air, and that every person deserves to live in a safe and healthy environment.
Through his leadership of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance, he challenged powerful industries, fought for accountability and brought the struggles of ordinary communities to national and international attention. His tireless work earned him the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in 2014.
The Presiding Officers said Dr D’Sa's life was a powerful reminder that ordinary citizens can bring about extraordinary change when they stand up for justice and the rights of others.
The Presiding Officers extend their heartfelt condolences to the D’Sa family following the tragic loss of Dr D’Sa, his son, Rodney D'Sa and sister-in-law, Patsy Bishop. Their thoughts are also with his colleagues, friends and the many communities whose lives he touched.
