Parliament, Friday, 04 August 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Police will visit Glebelands Hostel in uMlazi at 12h00 today (Friday, 04 August). The Committee resolved on this after it learnt of a woman who was shot and killed at the hostel last night. This incident brought the number of victims to 92.

The Committee visited in uMlazi police station yesterday and received a briefing about a provincial task team appointed to address challenges at Glebelands hostel. The Committee was not pleased with the interventions planned and recommended, among other things, the need for heightened intelligence-driven operations.

The Committee further said the challenges of Glebelands cannot be solved by the police only. They need an integrated approach that includes provincial government and the city of eThekwini. The Committee added that the South African Police Service must do all it can to arrest the situation at Glebelands.
