Parliament, Tuesday, 8 April 2025 – The chairpersons of three Peace and Security Cluster oversight committees in the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces will update the media on Thursday,10 April 2025, on these committees' critical work.

The three committees are the following:

  • Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans, chaired by Mr Molefi Legoete;
  • Joint Standing Committee on Defence, chaired by Mr Malusi Gigaba; and
  • Select Committee on Public Petitions and Executive Undertakings, chaired by Mr Ofentse Mokae.

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans, Mr Molefi, will discuss committee oversight issues relating to the status of the 2015 Defence Review, rejuvenating the South African Defence Force (SANDF) and defence funding.

Mr Gigaba is expected to provide a briefing on parliamentary oversight issues relating to state of the SANDF’s capability to undertake missions, the SANDF deployments, the role of the defence industry in growing the economy, as well as the functionality of its health service.

The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Public Petitions and Executive Undertakings will provide an update on the committee’s report on the Khutsong petition, the National Petitions Bill and the executive undertaking regarding Section 139(7) interventions in municipalities. He will also provide an update on the Parliamentary Petitions Office and e-Petitions.

The briefing is part of Parliament’s regular media engagement to deepen public accountability and transparency.
