Parliament, Thursday, 28 December 2023 – The Presiding Officers of Parliament mourn the tragic passing of Dr Mbongeni Ngema. The renowned writer, lyricist, composer, director, choreographer, and theatre producer died yesterday in a head-on collision in Bizana, Eastern Cape. He was 68 years old.

Dr Ngema's illustrious career started with him playing as a backing guitarist in theatre productions. He then went on to produce the multi-award-winning musical, Sarafina, which became a source of inspiration to many South Africans over the years. He produced and directed several plays throughout his career and received numerous accolades for his work.

Dr. Ngema is a testament to the transformative power of art in the face of apartheid oppression. His works transcended mere entertainment; they became powerful vehicles for social change and awareness. He revolutionized the creative sector, gaining global respect, by using his talent and passion to expose apartheid crimes and shed light on South African suffering. His art served as a powerful form of protest, amplifying the collective voice of his people and inspiring change, making him an icon both at home and internationally. The University of Kwa Zulu-Natal awarded him an honorary doctorate for his role and contribution to the creative and performing arts in South Africa.

“The tragic passing of Dr Ngema has deeply saddened us.  He is one of the artists that was able to creatively expose the social ills in an artistic way. As a nation, we have lost a legend whose undying spirit and energy for the stage will forever be etched in our minds. We will forever be indebted to his love, dedication, sacrifice as well as the hope and determination his inspired, not only in the performing arts sector but in all of us”, said Presiding Officers, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Mr Amos Masondo.

The Presiding Officers have again expressed deep concern regarding the continuing tragic accidents on our roads during this festive season. These incidents not only cause immeasurable distress to the affected families but also have a destabilizing effect on our communities as a whole. Such occurrences are both unacceptable and heart-breaking, and extraordinary efforts – including radical shifts in the attitudes and behaviours of all road users – are needed to put an end to this spate of road accidents.

As we approach the new year, and many South Africans embark on journeys to join fellowships in celebration of the new year, followed by their return from the Christmas holidays, we implore each and every one of us to exercise extraordinary caution and consideration for the safety of ourselves and others.

It is imperative that we fully cooperate with the law and law enforcement officers at all times. Whether you are a pedestrian, a driver, or a passenger, the responsibility to ensure that no more lives are lost on our roads rests in the hands of each road user. Let us come together as a nation to make our roads safer and prevent further tragedies.

The Presiding Officers extended their condolences to Dr Ngema’s family, colleagues, and friends. South Africa has lost a remarkable patriot and an accomplished artist.
