Parliament, Friday, 9 October 2026 – Parliament’s Presiding Officers, National Assembly Speaker Ms Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, congratulate Justice Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

Justice Pillay has spent her life standing up for people denied their rights and justice. From defending anti-apartheid activists to serving in international courts and as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, she has pursued justice with courage and integrity. This award affirms that lifelong commitment and the importance of holding those responsible for serious human rights violations accountable.

She joins Chief Albert Luthuli (1960), Archbishop Desmond Tutu (1984), and Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk (1993) among South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Her achievement strengthens our country’s contribution to peace, human rights and social justice.

The recognition is especially meaningful as South Africa commemorates 30 years since the adoption of its Constitution. Its Bill of Rights protects human dignity, equality and freedom. Justice Pillay’s work reminds us that these rights must be defended and made real in people’s lives.

This year also marks 70 years since the Women’s March of 1956. Her achievement continues the legacy of women who confronted injustice and helped change South Africa. It affirms women’s place in leadership and the need to remove the barriers they still face.

The Presiding Officers thank Justice Pillay for her service to South Africa and the world. She has given our country much to be proud of.
