Thursday, 27 April 2017 – The election of Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng as President of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa gives South Africans even more cause to be appreciative of our freedom, which we commemorate today.

Chief Justice Mogoeng’s election yesterday in Cape Town is a significant recognition of the Constitution and the Constitutional Court's instrumental role in strengthening our democracy, our system of checks and balances and in safeguarding the fundamental rights of citizens.

On behalf of Parliament, the Presiding Officers (Speaker of the National Assembly and Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces) take this opportunity to congratulate Chief Justice Mogoeng.

It is noteworthy that this significant recognition takes place during the year in which Parliament is commemorating and reflecting on the 20 years of the signing into law of the Constitution, its meaning and impact on the lives of ordinary South Africans.
