Parliament, Wednesday, 29 March 2017 – Public hearings on the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill proceed to Nkangala municipal area in the Mpumalanga province tomorrow (Thursday, 30 March). The hearings will take place at the Thembisile Hani Community,  Kwaggafontein in KwaMhlanga from 10 am.

The Mpumalanga leg of hearings on the Bill started today at Mbombela stadium, where the Committee engaged with hundreds of residents from the eHlanzeni district in Mpumalanga. The majority of residents that spoke during the hearings expressed support for the Bill.

However, the people of eHlanzeni municipal area were not happy with the proposal that 60% of the traditional council members should be selected by the traditional leader and 40% elected by the community. Residents said the percentages should be reconsidered or swapped, because the proposal currently gives too much power to traditional leaders.

Residents also wanted the Commission established for handling traditional leadership disputes and claims to consider cases before the proposed date of 01 September 1927. Currently, the Bill proposes that this Commission should deal with traditional leadership-related disputes and claims up until 01 September 1927.

The Committee noted these and other concerns and committed to take them to Parliament for deliberation.
