Parliament, Thursday 12 March 2020 – Permanent delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will, next week (17 to 20 March), visit the Gauteng Province for the Report Back Session of the Taking Parliament to the People (TPTTP). The visit will report back to the people of Gauteng on the issues they raised during the TPTTP programme held in that province in November 2018. The Report Back sessions are aimed at ensuring that the undertakings made by the Executive during the (TPTTP) main programme are monitored and implemented.
The overall theme of the TPTTP programme in Gauteng is the “Impact of migration - Deepening cooperative governance for accelerated service delivery and development.”
The multidisciplinary NCOP delegation of legislators, is divided into seven groups that will give feedback in the Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Tshwane Metropolitan, as well as West Rand District Municipalities.
The report-back session begins with a day-long account by the Executive on progress made since the main TPTTP programme held in November 2018 to address migration and related challenges. The Premier of Gauteng, national Ministers and provincial Members of the Executive Committees (MECs) are lined up to brief the NCOP on 17 March in the Johannesburg Town Hall from 09:00.
The Report Back programme includes a series of verification visits to 21 service delivery sites by over 120 Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPLs). The Chairperson of the NCOP Mr Amos Masondo, Gauteng Provincial Legislature Speaker Ms Ntombi Mekgwe and the Deputy Chairperson of the NCOP Ms Sylvia Lucas will lead the outreach programme. The service delivery site visits will be followed by MPs and MPLs meetings with the public to report on progress made.
The public meetings are unmediated opportunities for the citizens to interact with legislators on critical service delivery issues raised during the main programme of TPTTP in November 2018.
The NCOP’s TPTTP programme is a flagship intervention mechanism aimed at strengthening the oversight role of Parliament over the Executive, while also promoting citizen participation in governance.
