Parliament, Tuesday, 17 February 2026 – The National Assembly, during its special virtual sitting held today, has resolved to extend the reporting deadline of the Ad Hoc Committee established to investigate allegations made by Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The Committee’s mandate was due to expire on 20 February 2026. Following consideration of the Committee’s formal request, the Assembly adopted a resolution extending the Committee’s reporting date to 31 March 2026, in accordance with National Assembly Rule 253(6), which allows the House to revive or extend the lifespan of an ad hoc committee that has not yet completed its task.
In its submission to the Speaker, the Committee indicated that it still needs to engage outstanding witnesses before concluding its work. The Committee further advised that parliamentary programme pressures — including the State of the Nation Address and related debates — significantly limited available hearing days, leaving insufficient time to complete evidence-gathering and compile its report to the House .
The extension will enable the Committee to finalise hearings with the remaining witnesses and thereafter process and adopt its report before tabling it to the National Assembly.
Ad hoc committees are established to assist the House in exercising oversight and accountability functions, and adequate time must be provided to ensure thorough, fair and procedurally sound consideration of evidence.
Members of the public may continue to follow committee proceedings on Parliament’s broadcast and digital platforms as scheduled.
