Parliament, Monday, 5 June 2023 – The Portfolio Committee on Transport has learnt with shock of the passing of 11 people in a motor vehicle accident on the R61 between Lusikisiki and Flagstaff on Sunday, 4 June.

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Minah Lesoma, said the committee sends its heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the deceased. “It is shocking when we lose so many lives in this manner. It hurts when our people pass under circumstances where death needed not to have occurred,” the Chairperson said.

Ms Lesoma said the committee has noted the province’s commitment to provide support to all the survivors of the crash. “Although what caused the accident will be subject of an investigation, we continue to call on drivers to be circumspect and courteous on our roads at all times.”

The crash reportedly involved a bus and mini-bus taxi on Sunday. The incident comes soon after another fatal incident involving scholar transport in Mitchell’s Plain last week. The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to the families of all affected.
