Parliament, Friday, 26 August 2022 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Transport, Mosebenzi Zwane, has condemned the burning of Golden Arrow buses in Nyanga outside Cape Town.
Mr Zwane said: “The committee condemns in the strongest terms the violent burning and vandalism of a service that is of help to the community. Golden Arrow offers a public transport service that links the poorest of the poor with economic activity in the CBD.”
“We would encourage discussions if there are problems. They should not lead to the burning of buses and throngs of stranded commuters; the door is always open for discussion. The violent way of doing things will set us back in the transport sector,” added Mr Zwane.
He said local taxi associations should hold their members accountable because enforcement of laws is neither negotiable nor optional. “It did not matter what brought about the violence, discussions should always be the first and the only option to resolve disputes. The manner in which buses were being targeted, while ferrying passengers was wrong.”
A number of Golden Arrow buses were torched in Nyanga on Thursday, forcing the company to suspend operations in the area. Mr Zwane said efficient, affordable and safe public transport is non-negotiable.
