Parliament, Tuesday, 23 July 2024 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr Joe McGluwa, has sent the committee’s best wishes to South Africa’s team participating in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Mr McGluwa expressed his happiness with the bigger South African delegation this year, which will be participating in so many sporting codes. Team South Africa will participate in several events, including athletics, swimming, surfing, canoeing, climbing, rugby sevens, and gymnastics.

“The work that the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is doing is commendable. We would like to see improvement in the financial support the Department Art Sport and Culture gives to athletes for their development and their successes. Nonetheless, we believe the team representing us in Paris will bring home many medals,” Mr McGluwa said.

“We are happy that the team will compete with medal contenders such as Gerda Steyn, Wayde van Niekerk, Akani Simbine, Luxolo Adams, Chad Le Clos, Tatjana Smith and many others. These athletes must draw from the success of the Springboks team in the Rugby World Cup in France in November 2023,” he advised. “We wish the Mzansi team well and all the best, starting with the rugby sevens tomorrow,” Mr McGluwa said.

The committee met with representatives of the Auditor-General on Tuesday to understand the department’s spending patterns. Mr McGluwa said the meeting was fruitful and that the committee is committed to engaging with various stakeholders receiving funding from the department as the committee encourages mass participation in sports.
