Parliament, Thursday, 19 May 2022 – The Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture has noted the Minister, Mr Nathi Mthethwa’s, decision to review the R22 million monumental flag project.

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Beauty Dlulane, said it was important that the government was able to listen to the people and act accordingly, given the current economic climate of a stagnant economy and rising unemployment. “The committee was briefed on the concept on Tuesday, when the project was punted for its contribution in job creation and diversifying the South African heritage landscape; things which the committee noted.”

The figures were presented as estimations and that the department said it had only undertaken geotechnical studies that cost no more than R1.7 million. It was indicated that the remainder of the budget would be used as the project proceeded.

Ms Dlulane said the committee did not have an issue with the intention and motivation behind the concept and the figures were still to be presented in more detail to the committee. “But the committee is happy that the department has listened to the public sentiment and thus committed to rethink the concept and the figures involved.”
