Parliament, Sunday, 27 April 2025 – The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade, Ms Sonja Boshoff, has called on the Government of National Unity to capitalise on the momentum created by the historic visit of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to South Africa this week.

Ms Boshoff said that President Zelensky’s visit to Pretoria offered South Africa a renewed opportunity to reassert a principled, trade-focused foreign policy — one rooted in mutual cooperation, democratic values, and economic opportunity.

“There is far more to be gained from fostering strategic partnerships with countries such as Ukraine than from clinging to outdated alliances that do not serve our national interests. The Select Committee warmly welcomes the spirit of engagement shown during these two days of high-level talks, conducted as equals and friends,” Ms Boshoff said.

She emphasised that the visit should prompt a comprehensive review of bilateral relations with Ukraine, with a focus on expanding trade, investment, and diplomatic cooperation.

“Ukraine, together with its partners in Central Asia, the European Union, and the Far East, offers access to new and vital markets. South Africa must move swiftly and decisively to unlock these opportunities, particularly at a time when global competition for markets is intensifying.”

Ms Boshoff highlighted that building stronger, value-driven bilateral ties is essential to attracting foreign direct investment, expanding export opportunities, and boosting job creation at home — principles firmly aligned with the Democratic Alliance’s vision for an open, opportunity-driven economy.

On behalf of the committee, Ms Boshoff welcomed the high-level nature of President Zelensky’s visit, and noted that in the spirit of reciprocity and in recognition of South Africa’s stated commitment to democratic cooperation, it would be appropriate for the President of South Africa to undertake a return visit to Ukraine.

“South Africa must show that we are committed to principled international engagement based on respect for sovereignty, democracy, and mutual benefit. In an increasingly complex global environment, it is critical that we align ourselves with partners who share our commitment to peace, development, and prosperity,” Ms Boshoff concluded.
