Parliament, Monday, 16 March 2026 – The Select Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Mineral Resources visited Madibeng from 11–12 March 2026 to address challenges facing Sogima Mining Operations and the surrounding community.

Committee Chairperson Mr Mpho Bones Modise raised concern over the stalled relocation of Ward 27 residents, which has halted Sogima’s operations for nearly three years. Despite feasibility studies being completed, no memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between stakeholders, leaving the mine unable to operate and the community without promised job opportunities.

The committee criticised the collapse of the task team established to resolve the matter and questioned the Department of Human Settlements’ failure to act on ministerial instructions. Members also expressed concern over inconsistencies, noting that other mining companies continue blasting while Sogima remains restricted.

To accelerate resolution, the committee has requested a comprehensive report from the Housing Development Agency and Sogima by 31 March 2026, and scheduled a follow-up meeting with the Ministers of Mineral Resources and Human Settlements on 14 April 2026.
