Parliament, Monday, 24 March 2025 – The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Security and Justice, Ms Jane Mananiso, has condemned the mass shooting in Soshanguve on Saturday in which five patrollers died.

Ms Mananiso was responding to the incident in Marry Me informal settlement, north of Pretoria, in which four people died and were partially burnt, while eight others were wounded in a shooting. One of the wounded later died in hospital. Preliminary investigations suggest that a quarrel broke out between community patrollers and a group of five people on the street. The motive for the attack is still unknown.

She acknowledged the visit of the Premier of Gauteng and some of the members of the provincial executive. “We are very disappointed that such incident has happened during the month we’re we commemorating human rights and just after human rights day commemoration,” emphasised Ms Mananiso. She commended members of the South African Police Services that managed to apprehend the alleged perpetrators.

Ms Mananiso said: “This is concerning. These patrollers are volunteers who assist in our communities to ensure the safety of our people. Their main task is to make areas safer. It is an extremely gruesome attack and we are saddened to hear that they were burnt and killed.

“We need to rally our communities together to get rid of these criminals. We need more selfless volunteers who are prepared to fight for communities. We appeal to the authorities to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to book,” emphasised Ms Mananiso.

Ms Mananiso also commended the SAPS in Gauteng following the arrest of four suspects, including two SAPS members, in connection with truck hijackings and carjackings in Kempton Park on Thursday. The officers are accused of helping criminals hijack a G4S security vehicle. “We will not tolerate rotten apples in our SAPS. We commend the upstanding officers for their outstanding job in arresting the alleged suspects.”
