Parliament, Thursday, 24 March 2022 – The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) met with the National Treasury on the restriction of suppliers on 9 March 2022.

At that meeting, the committee inquired about the disposal of the 51% government stake in South African Airways (SAA). National Treasury requested to respond to the committee in writing and the committee granted them 14 days to do so.

On 20 March 2022, the Chairperson of SCOPA received a response from National Treasury of a letter dated 18 March 2022 on the matter. The response is receiving the attention of the Chairperson and will be discussed by the committee at a date yet to be determined, noting that Parliament is going on recess next week and the committee’s programme is already committed in the remaining dates available for committee work in this term.

The Chairperson will be writing to the Minister of Public Enterprises and the Department of Public Enterprises seeking an explanation on this matter, considering now the response given by National Treasury. The Chairperson will be sending a letter to the Minister and department today and the Minister will be requested to respond within 14 days. This is to ensure that when the committee meets to discuss the matter it is well informed of all the material facts and explanations required.

SCOPA remains committed to dealing with the matters of SAA in a manner that is transparent, consistent with good governance and in the national interest.

Please be advised that the Chairperson is out of the country on parliamentary business attending the Southern Africa Development Community Organisation of Public Accounts Committees Conference in Zimbabwe.
