Parliament, Thursday, 6 May 2021 – The Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure resumes public hearings on the Expropriation Bill in the Gauteng province today. The committee has successfully undertaken the hearings in Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga provinces.

The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Nolitha Ntobongwana, has expressed her satisfaction with the quality of inputs the committee received from the provinces it has reached. She said: “All the views expressed by citizens will be considered after the committee has reached all the provinces.”

The Expropriation Bill seeks to provide for the expropriation of property for public purposes or in the public interest and provide for certain instances where expropriation without compensation may be appropriate.

The first leg of the hearings in the Gauteng province is hosted by Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality’s Bronkhorstspruit Sports Centre. The hearings are conducted under strict Covid-19 protocols.
