Parliament, Tuesday, 26 May 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, has welcomed reports that the suspended South African Police Service (SAPS) Divisional Commissioner for Supply Chain Management, Lieutenant General Molefe Fani, has been served with an additional notice of investigation and intention to suspend in relation to the Medicare 24 Tshwane District tender.
Mr Cameron said it is imperative that the allegations linked to the Medicare 24 contract be fully investigated, particularly given Lt General Fani’s central role as custodian of procurement within SAPS.
“It is only fair that the culpability of Lt General Fani in the Medicare 24 contract be thoroughly investigated, as he is the custodian of all procurement within the South African Police Service. His removal from office will safeguard the integrity of the investigation and help ensure that the truth is uncovered,” Mr Cameron said.
The committee has consistently called for Lt General Fani’s suspension, dating back to allegations of procurement irregularities during his tenure at the National Treasury. The committee previously raised concern that despite the existence of a concerning Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report into procurement irregularities during the Covid-19 period, Lt General Fani was subsequently appointed to a senior procurement position within SAPS – an institution that manages one of the largest procurement budgets in government.
“The intention to suspend and investigate Lt General Fani is welcomed in the broader context of ensuring accountability and removing any officer who undermines the rule of law or brings the police service into disrepute,” Mr Cameron emphasised.
The Chairperson further stressed that the investigation process should be concluded without unnecessary delays and called for both internal disciplinary and criminal investigations to proceed concurrently to ensure accountability and public confidence in the process.
