Parliament, Friday, 1 April 2022 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson, welcomes the appointment of the new National Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant-General Fannie Masemola, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Chairperson says the committee looks forward to working with the newly appointed Police Commissioner to ensure that the South African Police Service (SAPS) delivers on the country’s constitutional objective of providing safer communities for all South Africans.
The Chairperson wishes Lt-Gen Masemola well on his appointment and reminds him that “the committee will robustly implement its oversight responsibility to ensure that police members are held accountable in our attempts to build a safer South Africa for all our citizens.” The Chairperson further calls on all rank-and-file police officers and the SAPS’s top management team to support Lt-Gen Masemola.
The Chairperson would like to thank the outgoing National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Khehla Sithole and wishes him well in his next endeavour. The Chairperson would also like to thank President Ramaphosa for his swift action in appointing the new National Commissioner.
