Parliament, Wednesday, 10 June 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, has broadly welcomed the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) renewed commitment to accountability, particularly the decisive action taken against officers implicated in alleged wrongdoing. In the same spirit, the Chairperson has called for the suspension of senior Crime Intelligence officer Major General Feroz Khan, who was arrested in May 2026.
“The intrepidity and swiftness shown by the SAPS leadership in holding officers accountable, irrespective of rank, is commendable. It is for this reason that logic dictates that Major General Khan should also be suspended. Any officer alleged to have broken the law must be suspended in order to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations,” said Mr Cameron.
The Chairperson emphasised that accountability must remain the standard for every police officer, regardless of position or seniority. Consistent and impartial application of disciplinary measures is essential to maintaining public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
The committee has consistently maintained that intelligence-led policing is the most effective strategy in the fight against crime. Against this backdrop, the arrest of a senior Crime Intelligence officer is particularly concerning.
“It is for this reason that the arrest of a senior Crime Intelligence officer undermines a strategic pillar of policing. It also exposes the extent of the rot that continues to plague the SAPS Crime Intelligence environment,” Mr Cameron said.
The Chairperson reiterated that restoring public trust in the police service requires decisive action against corruption and criminality within its ranks. He stressed that no individual should be shielded from accountability and that the integrity of the SAPS must be protected through transparent and consistent enforcement of the law.
