Parliament, Friday, 5 June 2026- The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, has welcomed the signing of a proclamation by President Cyril Ramaphosa authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of maladministration, improper or unlawful conduct, and to recover any financial losses suffered by the State linked to training contracts awarded by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) and the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

“We have long called for an investigation into the seemingly brazen conduct that has resulted in the loss of taxpayers’ money. This programme has also deprived deserving young people of training opportunities that could have opened doors to a better future in a country facing high levels of unemployment,” Mr Cameron said.

The committee has consistently called for the suspension of both the CEO and the CFO to protect the integrity and credibility of the investigations. The signing of the proclamation further underscores the need for their suspension, which should now be effected as a matter of urgency.

The committee remains concerned that no meaningful recovery process has been instituted despite the increased scrutiny surrounding the programme, and that there has been no clear consequence management for those implicated.

“Maladministration thrives in an environment where there is no consequence and impunity is allowed to take root. Urgent action is therefore necessary,” Mr Cameron emphasised.

The Chairperson has urged the SIU to proceed with the investigation without delay to ensure that the facts are established and accountability is enforced where wrongdoing is found. Mr Cameron emphasised that the investigation is a direct result of the committee's persistent calls for accountability and its continued efforts to ensure that allegations of wrongdoing are properly investigated, as impunity cannot be allowed to take root within public institutions.

The committee will continue to monitor developments closely and will periodically call on the SIU to provide progress reports on the investigation.
