Parliament, Monday, 11 May 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, has welcomed the arrest and appearance in court of senior South African Police Service official Major General Feroz Khan, as well as the Gauteng head of the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks), Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, in connection with alleged dealing with precious metals.

"The arrest of the two senior officers is proof that in a constitutional democracy no one is above the law. In line with the precedent that has already been set, the two officers must be suspended to safeguard the credibility of the investigations," Mr Cameron emphasised.

The Chairperson also highlighted that crime intelligence has a critical role in combating crime, and if a senior official is alleged to actively play a role in criminality, this is an indictment on the SAPS and undermines its credibility, putting the good name of the SAPS into disrepute.

Furthermore, consequence management should be a pillar of SAPS’s work, because without effective consequence management, trust in SAPS will be eroded further.

Meanwhile, Mr Cameron has welcomed the suspension of Lieutenant General Molefe Fani, the head of supply chain management within the South African Police Service.

"The committee has long called for the suspension of Lt General Fani in light of the SIU report into Covid-19 procurement, while he was still at National Treasury. The suspension, while welcomed, should be followed up by strong disciplinary action. Procurement irregularities cannot be left unattended to, as they create an environment of impunity that enables corruption to fester," Mr Cameron emphasised.
