Parliament, Monday, 15 July 2024 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, has condemned the brazen attack and criminality that led to the death of one South African Police Service (SAPS) member and injury to other members in Bizana earlier today. The continued maiming of members of the SAPS is a direct attack on the state and the Chairperson has urged SAPS management in the Eastern Cape to leave no stone unturned in apprehending the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
“The committee, in its first meeting last week, emphasised the need for strategies to curtail the continuing attacks on police officers. We cannot tolerate the continued killing of law enforcement officers as they represent a critical buffer against crime for all South Africans. It is unacceptable that about 140 police officers have been killed in the past four years (up to January 2024),” Mr Cameron said.
The Chairperson, on behalf of the Portfolio Committee, extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain officer and wishes the injured SAPS members a speedy recovery.
The Chairperson highlighted that police safety and wellness will be one of the critical areas in its oversight work. The Chairperson has also called on the community to share information that will lead to the speedy arrest of the perpetrators. “We will not rest until there are strategies in place that reverse the current trend of police killings. We will also ensure that we monitor investigations around any case of police killings to ensure justice,” Mr Cameron stressed.
