Parliament, Friday, 8 December 2023 – After deliberating on the amendments to the Statistics Amendment Bill [B31-2023], the Portfolio Committee on Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation adopted both the A-List of the Bill and the report, while noting the Economic Freedom Fighters’ reservations and the Democratic Alliance’s objections to the report.

The report, and the B-List of the Bill will be published in the ATC (Anouncements, Tablings and Committee reports) once Committee Section and the Parliament Constitutional and Legal Services processes are concluded. The report on the Bill will be tabled to the National Assembly (NA) for its deliberations and adoption. Thereafter, it will pass to the President for assent into law.

The Bill also seeks to strengthen co-ordination and enhance collaboration amongst data producers and data users by creating an enabling environment for the production and consumption of quality statistics within South Africa; and to make provision for the establishment of statistics units by organs of state, the submission of annual statistics plans and annual reports by organs of state and the establishment of the Statistical Clearing House in order to promote the functions and objectives of the National Statistics System.
