Parliament, Thursday, 31 March 2022 – The Free State’s delegation of permanent delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) have today concluded its Provincial Week programme in the province. The delegation had a week-long opportunity through the NCOP’s Provincial Week programme to assess the state of service delivery in the province.

The delegation visited today service delivery sites that are in Masilonyana Local Municipality’s Brandfort, Theunissen and Winburg towns. It focused on Sedibeng-Winburg pipeline and the bucket eradication project in Theunissen.

The delegation also heard that the bucket system was replaced by flushing toilets in Theunissen. It heard that there is a lot of water leakages in the town and that the people use wheelbarrows to get water.

The delegation saw the vandalized boreholes in Brandfort which caused unavailability of water in the area. It also heard that the rapid growth of the informal settlements in the area also causes the shortage of water.

There is a bulk water pipe project in Winburg which is aimed at improving water quality. The project is aimed to be completed in the next financial year. The last site of service delivery which was visited by the delegation was Winburg Sewerage Treatment Plant which is a health hazard to the community.

The delegation will have a debriefing session tomorrow where it will also consider and adopt its Provincial Week programme.
