Parliament, Thursday, 29 May 2025 – The Chairperson of the Multi-Party Women’s Caucus (MPWC), Ms Lindelwa Dunjwa, has expressed her trust in the justice system following the life sentences meted out to the three accused found guilty in the human trafficking of the young Joshlin Smith.
“We note the sentences against the three accused. It is horrific to think that a mother could be part of something so horrible. It is incomprehensible that she could sell her child. Up to now, the young child is still missing,” said an emotional Ms Dunjwa.
She said child abuse is a heinous crime that often leaves irreparable emotional, psychological and physical scars. The Joshlin Smith case highlights the urgent need for collective action to safeguard all children.
“It is extremely saddening to note that a mother, a women, someone who was supposed to protect this young child and has that instinctively installed in her, is involved in her trafficking.
“Furthermore, we want to appreciate all the role players – from the South African Police Services, the community and up the court officials and processes – for ensuring that justice in served. We see this as an example of what could be done when all stakeholders stand together. You have proved that this can be done in all matters,” emphasised the Chairperson.
