Parliament, Tuesday, 10 December 2024 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Mr Tebogo Letsie, acknowledges and celebrates the reappointment of Professor Puleng LenkaBula as Vice-Chancellor of the University of South Africa (Unisa) for a second term.

Mr Tebogo Letsie remarked, “As the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, we warmly welcome and extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor LenkaBula. Her reappointment is a testament to her hard work and dedication, which have contributed significantly to stabilizing Unisa’s reputation, administrative processes and teaching and learning.”

Unisa’s Council stated that Professor LenkaBula’s reappointment followed a thorough review of her first term, during which she played a pivotal role in fostering sustainable growth and institutional stability. Professor LenkaBula made history as the first woman to serve as principal and vice-chancellor in the university's nearly 150-year history. According to Unisa, her second term will commence on 1 January 2026.

Mr Letsie further highlighted the significance of her achievement, saying, “Her reappointment underscores her ability to excel in a field traditionally dominated by men, marking a significant milestone for gender equality in leadership across South African universities.”

“We urge the university community to rally behind Professor LenkaBula as she continues to shape Unisa into a highly respected institution and one of South Africa’s leading universities,” concluded Mr. Letsie.
