Parliament, Saturday, 3 June 2023 – The residents of Lejweleputswa District in Free State who participated in the public hearings that were conducted by the Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and Environment at the Ferdie Meyer Hall in Welkom, in Matjhabeng Local Municipality today, overwhelmingly expressed support for the Climate Change Bill [B9-2022].

The public hearings in Free State on the Bill forms part of the final leg, following wide-ranging consultations with the members of the public in eight provinces. Some of the residents of Lejweleputswa District proposed amendments in chapters 2 and 4 of the Bill.

The participants argued that the Bill should make provision for mechanisms to relieve financial burden from implementers such as provinces and municipalities. They also expressed a view that the Bill should contain a clause with severe penalties against transgressors.

The Climate Change Bill seeks, among other things, to enable the development of an effective climate change response and a long-term, just transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy and society for South Africa in the context of sustainable development. Members of the media are invited to attend.

Tomorrow, 4 June 2023, the committee will hold another public hearing from 10:00 to 14:00 at the Simson Sefuthi Community Hall in Botshabelo in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality.
