Parliament, Thursday, 29 January 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Transport has noted with deep sadness the car crash today that killed 11 people outside Isiphingo, in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The committee Chairperson, Mr Selelo Donald Selamolela, extends the committee‘s heartfelt and deep condolences to the families of those who passed away.
“We want to also wish a speedy recovery to those injured. When these accidents occur it will always be the most unfortunate thing. Although we accept that it is never the intention to kill our people but the committee will always call for tighter legislative mechanism for reckless driver behaviour,” he said.
“The committee remains concerned with the frequency of these kinds of accidents that kill so many of our people unnecessarily.”
The committee is currently visiting KwaZulu-Natal on a week-long oversight programme of infrastructure projects and entities and attended the crash scene with the MEC of Transport.
Mr Selamolela said South Africa’s roads need attention as do reckless truck drivers. “The committee maintains its view that trucks on our roads are too many, and to reduce them is to attend and resolve issues of rail. This accident is unfortunate and wholly unnecessary. The committee is crying with the rest of KZN for the lives lost this morning and wishes speedy recovery to the seven that survived the crash.”
On Friday the committee will receive a briefing on the EThekwini Metro Bus Rapid Transit system, and will experience the service first hand.
