Parliament, Friday, 6 December 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development postpones its oversight visit to the South African Human Rights Commissions’ (SAHRC’s) Head Office in Gauteng due to the strike action that has resulted in cancellations of the South African Airways (SAA) flights.
Committee Chairperson Mr Xola Nqola said flight cancellations is due to the industrial action by SAA pilots. “This is completely out of our hands and we wish to profusely apologise to all who are inconvenienced by the action. As the committee we feel encouraged by the reality that the oversight programme for the SAHRC Head Office remains part of the agenda of the committee, it doesn’t fall away,” stressed Mr Nqola.
The committee was due to engage with staff at the SAHRC Head Office in Gauteng today after it received numerous complaints about an alleged toxic environment at the organisation. The committee held a meeting with the SAHRC commissioners where they responded to these and other allegations. The committee resolved to hold a meeting with the Commission’s staff to afford them an opportunity to share their perspective on all the allegations.
In its meeting held on 26 November 2024, the committee resolved to undertake an oversight visit to the commission where it aimed to interact with commissioners and staff to gain a better understanding of the situation.
