Parliament, Friday, 13 September 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development today called for applications and nominations for the position of Deputy Public Protector (DPP).

The position became vacant late last year when the then DPP was appointed Public Protector. The process was started early this year, just before the end of the 6th Parliament, but it was stopped due to time constraints.

The President appoints the DPP on the recommendation of the National Assembly for a period the President may determine at the time of appointment. The period cannot exceed seven years. The Deputy Public Protector may be reappointed for one additional term at the end of his or her term. The annual salary for the position is R2 031 835.

The person recommended for appointment must be a South African citizen who is a fit and proper person to hold such office and who:

  1. Is admitted as an advocate or an attorney and has, for a cumulative period of at least 10 years after having been admitted, practised as an advocate or an attorney; or
  2. Is qualified to be admitted as an advocate or an attorney and has, for a cumulative period of at least 10 years after having so qualified, lectured in law at a university; or
  3. Has specialised knowledge of or experience, for a cumulative period of at least 10 years, in the administration of justice, public administration or public finance; or
  4. Has, for a cumulative period of at least 10 years, been a Member of Parliament; or
  5. Has acquired any combination of experience mentioned in paragraphs (a) to (d) for a cumulative period of at least 10 years.


Nominations/applications must contain a curriculum vitae (CV) providing the nominee/applicant’s:

  • Full name, ID number and gender;
  • Contact details, including physical address, telephone/cell phone number and email address;
  • Relevant previous work experience (including relevant dates and organisations concerned); and
  • Academic qualifications.

In the case of nominations, the nomination must also contain the full name, address/email address, and contact details of the person or organisation making the nomination, as well as a signed acceptance by the nominee.

The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Xola Nqola, said a list of all the nominations/applications received will be published to allow members of the public to comment on the suitability of candidates. The shortlisted candidates will be subjected to a screening process.
