Parliament, Thursday, 25 July 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development Chairperson, Mr Xola Nqola, has applauded the appointment of the current Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya as next Chief Justice of South Africa.
Mr Nqola said it is indeed a great milestone that the country will see its first female Chief Justice with the latest appointment. “This is a great milestone for the country and its efforts to promote gender equality and the emancipation of women. Justice Maya is a highly respected and dedicated jurist. The committee commends this appointment,” said Mr Nqola. Her appointment is with effect from 1 September 2024 as she will take over from Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, whose term ends on 31 August.
Mr Nqola said Justice Maya’s qualifications and judicial record, her leadership qualities, her experience, and leadership as a judge in various courts, including in the Supreme Court of Appeal and her role as Deputy Chief Justice, makes her aptly qualified to lead the country’s judiciary.
“She follows in the footsteps of great legal minds as she becomes the seventh Chief Justice in the democratic South Africa. The committee wishes her well on her appointment and knows she will make the country proud,” added Mr Nqola.
