Parliament, Sunday, 31 May 2026 – The Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests has agreed on a public participation process as part of the comprehensive review of Parliament’s Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests, as well as the Executive Ethics Code.
The committee views the process as critical to strengthening public trust in Parliament as a democratic institution. “This is more than a technical exercise. It is about renewing and strengthening accountability. Ethics rules protect the integrity of public office and ensure transparency, accountability and public confidence,” said Mr Henni Britz, Co-Chairperson of the committee.
The public participation process is both critical and constitutionally mandated in terms of Section 59 of the Constitution. It also follows the committee’s earlier call for public submissions.
The committee believes the current codes and ethical frameworks reveal areas that require improvement to strengthen public confidence in Parliament. “Financial relationships, digital influence and public expectations have evolved significantly, making this review both necessary and timely,” Mr Britz emphasised.
The committee will hold a virtual public hearing on the Executive Ethics Code on 5 June 2026, followed by hearings on the review of the Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests on 12 June 2026.
