Parliament, Wednesday, 15 April 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, welcomes the appointment of Mr Roelf Meyer as the next envoy to the US, filling the ambassadorial position left open after the departure of the previous incumbent, Mr Ebrahim Rasool, in March 2025.
“We are supporting President Ramaphosa’s appointment of this veteran South African architect of democracy and a versatile politician. We are looking forward confidently and with optimism to his contribution in taking the relations between the two countries forward,” said Mr Mahumapelo.
“The best of all is that South Africa and the United States both believe in dialogue, democratic values and working together to address any challenges.” Mr Meyer previously played a significant role as an international peace mediator in Northern Ireland, where he enhanced trust and facilitated reconciliation between the various political stakeholders in the conflict.
