Parliament, Saturday, 25 July 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation on Friday held a bilateral meeting with a delegation from the Parliament of Egypt, led by the Chairperson of the African Relations Committee of the Chamber of Representatives, Dr Sherif El Gabaly.


The meeting provided and opportunity for the two parliamentary committees to exchange views, share best practices and strengthen parliamentary cooperation on matters of mutual interest. The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, said the engagement reaffirmed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in deepening relations between South Africa and Egypt and in promoting cooperation on continental and global priorities.

Mr Mahumapelo said the bilateral engagement was an important platform for strengthening dialogue between the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa and the Parliament of Egypt, particularly on issues affecting Africa’s development, regional cooperation, peace and stability, and the role of legislatures in advancing the aspirations of the continent. The committee welcomed the engagement and expressed its commitment to continued cooperation with the Parliament of Egypt through regular dialogue, the sharing of parliamentary experiences and collaboration in areas of common interest.

The Parliament of Egypt stands with South Africa on the plight of the people of Palestine and reiterated its longstanding support for the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, and reaffirmed its rejection of any forced displacement of Palestinians from their land. Mr Mahumapelo reinforced South Africa’s support for a two-state solution that ensures Palestine's independence.

The two committees reaffirmed their commitment to developing programmes to benefit women and youth in both countries, particularly in the economic, automotive and construction sectors.
The bilateral meeting took place at Egypt House in Pretoria.
