Parliament, Tuesday, 28 April 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, wishes the two-day African Union (AU) G20 retreat every success.
The retreat, hosted by the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, began yesterday in Malabo, the country’s capital. The retreat will, among other things, discuss lessons from South Africa’s G20 Presidency in 2025, the upcoming G20 summit to be hosted by the United States, the priorities and opportunities for Africa, a common AU position under Agenda 2026, stronger coordination and leadership transition, and a roadmap for Africa’s G20 engagement.
The AU became a permanent member of the G20 in 2023.
Mr Mahumapelo expressed optimism that the retreat will yield positive outcomes on the matters under consideration. “The Equatorial Guinea retreat, like previous AU retreats, will deliver the expected outcomes as the AU has the intellectual capacity to address the issues on its agenda,” said Mr Mahumapelo.
The retreat is taking place amid ongoing debate on whether the AU should boycott the G20 Summit in Miami in solidarity with South Africa, which played a pivotal role in securing the AU’s admission to the G20.
“It is our hope that the AU will do everything in its power to counter any attempts to further fragment Africa by not being in solidarity with South Africa (SA), as SA is part of the G20 troika,” Mr Mahumapelo said. The G20 troika comprises South Africa, the United States and the United Kingdom.
