Parliament, Monday, 1 June 2026 – The Impeachment Committee on the Section 89 Enquiry has elected Mr Makashule Gana as its Chairperson.
The committee convened today for its inaugural meeting to elect a chairperson. Two members were nominated for the position: Dr Lehlohonolo Mahlatsi and Mr Makashule Gana. Following a vote by committee members, Mr Gana secured the support of 19 members, while Dr Mahlatsi received 12 votes.
The election marks the formal commencement of the committee’s work. As Chairperson, Mr Gana will provide leadership to the committee, oversee its proceedings, guide its deliberations, and ensure that its work is conducted in accordance with the Constitution, the Rules of the National Assembly, and the committee’s mandate under Section 89 of the Constitution.
The committee will now turn its attention to determining its programme of work and considering the next steps in the enquiry process. Details of future meetings and activities will be communicated in due course.
